SA5’s 6G charging study (TR 32.801-02) is at v0.6.0. Its new questions are how to charge for resources other than bytes, including AI tokens, computing, sensing and agents, and whether charging should be centralised or distributed.
In 60 seconds
| Key issue | Question |
|---|---|
| #1.1 | Charging for edge applications |
| #1.2 | The 6G charging architecture itself |
| #1.3 | Adjusting charges for UE contributions |
| #1.4 | Interworking across 6G, 5G and EPS |
Five solutions compete:
The mechanism topic (#2.1–#2.9) covers data interoperability while 5G and 6G coexist, how the charging APIs and ASN.1 are organised, multi-dimensional resource charging, optimisation and reliability. It carries 26 solutions, including unified data handling, compression, dynamic switching, and charging based on performance measurements.
The service topic is where 6G differs from 5G. Key issues cover AI traffic, media components, intent-based charging, AI token metrics, dynamic QoS, ISAC, system data exposure, AI agents, training services and computing services. Each needs a unit and a trigger that the 5G converged charging system does not have.
Rapporteur: Zhiwei Mo (China Telecom). Work item FS_6G_CH, WID SP-251708, September 2025 to June 2027. It started earliest of the SA5 6G studies.
Still open
Distributed vs centralised architecture, and which units become normative for AI tokens and computing. The report’s direction is to evolve 5G converged charging, not replace it.
